REGES DEC 00

Hon.Colonial Secretary,

I have perused the Local Auditor's re-

port and it so fully confirms all that has been previously

reported, as to the wants of the Shanghai Post Office, parti-

cularly in respect of Staff, that I need do no more now than

recommend that the proposed additional 2 clerks be approved

as from the 1st.proximo.There are no funds available under

the head "Personal Emoluments", but as the total vote under

Post Office will not be exceeded, if their engagement be ap-

proved salaries at the rate recommended viz,840 each per

month, can be paid.

Regarding the uniforas recommended for the

Postmen, I would mention that this matter has already been con-

sidered by me, and I proposed to have them supplied next year.

On the subject of the condition of the

Post Office building and the want of additional quarters for the extra Postmen, I would be glad if next year the matter could be fully taken up. I may mention that there were cer- tain necessary repairs authorised to be done some time ago.

I have enquired of the Postmaster whether they have been done and also asked him to furnish me with a rough estimate of the actual needs of the Shanghai British Post Office to make it

more presentable.
